Scorpion SYTZ14S AGM BatteryThe small size of the VT750DC battery leaves little power reserve and cold starting can be a potential issue. Combine that with the long recharge time of a wet cell battery and you could find yourself with battery troubles if you don't regularly trickle charge. Short trips are not enough to recharge a heavily discharged battery. The stators in the VT750 bikes may take hours to fully recharge a battery.  From my experience only the best wet cell lead acid batteries have the additional cold cranking amps and reserve to get the job done as snappy as I'd like but still may need additional charging if you are not riding for long periods of time and often. Another problem is that the top of the line Yuasa is ~$150+.

That said, I think I have found a great affordable alternative that may even have some advantages: The Scorpion AGM Motorcycle battery, specifically the SYTZ14S model for the VT750DC, which I purchased for a very low price from batterystuff.com.  The Scorpion brand is "manufactured by one of the largest makers of motorcycle and ATV batteries in the world" and is also ISO9001 certified. The battery itself is similar in specs to the incredibly popular Yuasa YTZ14S Wet Cell battery. They both are maintenance free, have 230 Cold Cranking Amps and 11.2 Amp/hours. The Scorpion battery is a little bit smaller in length as it can achieve the same CCA without the additional plates used in the Yuasa therefore it is also 0.2 lbs lighter.

AGM stands for Absorbed Glass Mat, an AGM battery uses fiberglass mesh to contain the electrolyte between the battery plates meaning the electrolyte is immobilized. The battery is sealed and is maintenance free as there is no liquid acid so there isn't an internal corrosion problem. When kept properly charged there is no atmospheric venting from the battery meaning less corrosion buildup at the terminals as well. The internal mat resists vibrations, and is heat and freeze resistant. And finally the best feature about an AGM battery is a very low self-discharge rate! If you store your bike for the winter season you had better put your regular wet cell battery on a float/trickle charger to prevent it from dying over the winter.  From my experience with the Scorpion AGM battery even after months of sitting when I would hook up the automatic trickle charger just in case it shows the battery to be fully charged.

To conclude: My wallet is very happy at the price. My bike starts quick and snappy, the battery held a charge all winter with no problem. It only has a one year warranty, however, I am hopefully that this battery will give me years of worry free operation.
